Big News in Texas: Medicaid Expands Coverage for Nutrition Care
Texas HB26 expands Medicaid coverage for nutrition counseling and launches a pilot for Medically Tailored Meals in maternal health. Learn why it matters.
As of September 1, 2025, a new law in Texas (HB26) has gone into effect that expands Medicaid coverage for nutrition-related care. This is a big step forward for health equity, chronic disease prevention, and maternal health across the state.
At Nurish’d, we believe that access to food-as-medicine and nutrition support should be a right, not a privilege. That’s why we’re breaking down what this bill means and why it matters.
1. Medicaid Coverage for Medical Nutrition Therapy (MNT)
Under Texas HB26, Medicaid managed care contracts are now required to cover nutrition counseling (also known as Medical Nutrition Therapy, or MNT).
MNT is an evidence-based, cost-effective service provided by registered dietitians that helps individuals manage chronic conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, obesity, and more. Until now, coverage for these services under Medicaid was limited and inconsistent.
Why this matters:
Creates more equitable access to qualified nutrition professionals.
Supports better outcomes in chronic disease management.
Reduces long-term healthcare costs by focusing on prevention and lifestyle-based care.
2. Maternal Health Pilot Program: Medically Tailored Meals
Another important piece of the legislation is the Maternal Health Pilot Program (Section 540.02721).
This program authorizes Medicaid to provide Medically Tailored Meals (MTMs) to pregnant Medicaid recipients who have chronic health conditions such as gestational diabetes, hypertension, or obesity.
What are MTMs?
Medically Tailored Meals are specially designed by nutrition professionals to meet the unique medical needs of individuals living with chronic conditions. For pregnant people, MTMs can:
Improve maternal and infant health outcomes.
Reduce complications during pregnancy and delivery.
Provide accessible, nutritious meals that directly support treatment plans.
Why This is a Game-Changer
Texas is now recognizing food and nutrition as essential components of healthcare. By expanding Medicaid coverage to include nutrition counseling and piloting MTMs for maternal health, the state is investing in prevention, healthier families, and long-term cost savings.
For Nurish’d, this legislation represents an important opportunity to partner with healthcare providers, insurers, and communities in Texas to deliver better nutrition solutions to those who need them most.
